What is Compassion?

Compassion means recognizing suffering in oneself and others--and taking steps to alleviate the discomfort.

Compassion is at the heart of policing.

Let’s elevate compassion in law enforcement for greater performance, well-being, and resilience.

Compassion Can Improve Public Safety

Compassion Can Improve Public Safety and Help Officers and Communities Thrive.

As law enforcement evolves to meet today’s public safety challenges, compassion is emerging as a key to greater inclusion and performance.

A growing body of research and leading experts in workplace culture and policing indicate compassion is critical to recruitment, retention and resilience among officers. A compassionate culture also is vital to attracting and retaining female officers and leaders. According to workplace experience firm Great Place to Work, women are 2.5 times more likely than men to want their workplace to be compassionate.

Self-compassion and compassion for fellow officers leads to inclusive behaviors, improved conflict-resolution capabilities, quicker recoveries from challenges, better police-community relationships and increased public safety.

30X30, the leading initiative to improve women's representation in law enforcement, is promoting compassion in policing in partnership with Project Compassion, a group of experts in law enforcement, workplace culture and trauma-informed practices.

Join the movement to strengthen the heart of policing.
